September 21,
2013
Irwindale,
Calif. - - With all sorts of Hot Rods and Pinups on premises (it
was a special night with the theme of cool cars and hip people with
the iconic Mooneyes crew on hand, the Eagle Rock Trompers car club
running a special pre-event valve cover race, and a Chalet full of hot
- mostly Mustang - muscle cars all which was sponsored by Dirty
Rotten Rides), a festive crowd enjoyed a great night of NASCAR
Home Track Racing that had a raft of thrills and one spectacular
spill which saw Hesperia's Shawn Rizzone briefly flame up after he
flipped his SW Tour Truck going into turn three. To the crowd's
relieved cheers, Rizzone emerged from the bad-looking snarl shaken
but unharmed.
Arcadia's Neil Conrad and Zack
Green (Long Beach) got everyone's attention in the Pick Your Part Southwest
Tour Trucks race that saw the two put on a great display of
ultra-close, ultra-competitive, clean racing. Conrad won and
the fans got their money's worth of authentic short track action.
As usual, Irwindale's Mini
Stocks were a ton of fun to watch as Rancho Cucamonga resident
Robby Hornsby put on a bit of a driving clinic in the small bore/big
heart division that runs on the low-banked Irwindale inner third mile
course where handling (almost always) trumps horsepower.
The featured Lucas Oil Late
Models ran one heck of a show with every position on the track in
contention on every lap ... On lap 30 Trevor Huddleston (Agoura
Hills) running fourth made a move on third place Covina's Mike
Johnson that sent the two of them into the turn 3 wall and both of
their cars to the pits with heavy damage to both machines. The
wreck set up a tense 10-lap shoot-out with race leader Ryan
Partridge (Rancho Cucamonga) running out ahead of a hard charging
Toni McCray from Highland. Partridge prevailed and put win
number four (in seven starts) in the books for the Irwindale
championship division. Rookie points leader Andrew Porter from
La Verne got a clean third place, solidifying his lead for 2013 ROY
honors.

And now ... In the immortal words
of the late great Indianapolis Motor Speedway Public Address
announcer Tom Carnegie:
"It's a Neeeeeeeeeew
Trrrrrrrack Rayyyyyyyyyy-Cord!"
Forty, count 'em 40 Irwindale
Skid Plate Cars took to an especially-prepared third-mile plus
devilishly-kinked "roval" course for the night's final
contest making it the largest number of racing cars ever to start an
event at the 14 year-old facility. When the thirteen-minute,
five-point-six-one-five second conflagration was finally flagged,
first time winner Temple City's Michael Digregorio got the trophy and
the fans finally got a chance to sit down (having been jumping to
their feet repeatedly during the night). Andy Partridge
(LaVerne) was second with the "Godfather of the
Skidmobiles", Hawthorne's own Robert Rice coming forward from
somewhere deep in the 40-car starting field. In a remarkable
drive (for his first time ever in one of these weirdmobiles) the west
coast editor Jason Torchinsky of the popular car culture website
Jalopnik, finished twentieth only 5 laps down.
